Trimethylglycine (TMG), better known by its common name betaine, is a derivative of the amino acid glycine and is found mainly in beets (= scientific "beta", hence betaine), but is also found in foods such as beetroot, fish, whole grain products and spinach.

Betaine plays an important role in the body, for example, in the conversion of homocysteine ​​and can thus lower an increased homocysteine ​​level (together with vitamins B6, B12 and folic acid). An excess of homocysteine ​​is considered a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, stroke and other diseases (see below).

Manufacture of betaine

Our pure, plant-based TMG betaine is produced by the experts at Agrana from sugar beet in a special crystallization plant in Tulln (Lower Austria). The crystalline betaine is extracted from the molasses in numerous complex production steps. Molasses is the name given to the thick, dark brown syrup that is produced during sugar production. In addition to betaine, this molasses also contains salts and sugar. These residues are removed and finally liquid betaine is extracted from the thick juice. This has to go through further stages of concentration, drying and purification until the crystalline betaine is more than 99% pure.

What is a methyl group and what is a methyl group donor?

Betaine is chemically called tri-methyl-glycine, which means: It is the amino acid glycine to which three (tri) methyl groups are attached. In chemistry, the methyl group is the combination of one carbon atom (C) with 3 hydrogen atoms (H) (chemical formula: CH3). Betaine is therefore a glycine with three CH3 groups.

For reasons which would be too complex to explain here, betaine can readily give these methyl groups to other compounds. Such a reaction is called “methylation” in chemistry and a compound that can do this is called a “methyl (group) donor” or “donor”. It's like a freight train with three wagons handing over one wagon to another locomotive.

Betaine is one of the methyl group donors. Methylation is an important reaction that takes place in countless metabolic processes. Let's look at an example in which betaine can play an important role as a methyl group donor:

Betaine can help regulate homocysteine ​​metabolism

Betaine plays an important role in the conversion of homocysteine ​​and can thus lower an increased level of homocysteine ​​in the body (together with vitamins B6, B12 and folic acid).

Homocysteine ​​is a natural amino acid that the body does not incorporate into proteins (which are made up of amino acids). Rather, homocysteine ​​occurs dissolved in the blood. A constantly high homocysteine ​​blood level is associated with the development of atherosclerosis ("hardening of the arteries"). An excess of homocysteine ​​is therefore a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, stroke and other diseases. Betaine can help break down homocysteine. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has therefore approved betaine for the treatment of a genetic disease in which too much homocysteine ​​builds up in the body.

However, science does not yet know exactly how high homocysteine ​​levels and heart disease are related. It is not yet clear whether homocysteine ​​itself is harmful or whether it is just an indicator of an increased risk of heart disease.

Other interesting functions of betaine are:

  • Betaine acts as a so-called osmolyte. Betaine helps keep fluid levels inside and outside the cells in balance. It protects the cells, proteins and enzymes and ensures their optimal function even under extreme conditions such as dehydration (lack of water)
  • Betaine plays a role in lipid metabolism and liver health. As animal studies show, betaine can protect against harmful fat deposits in the liver. Fatty liver can result from alcohol abuse, obesity, diabetes, and other causes. Preliminary human studies have shown similar results, but more research is needed here.

Our betaine is not to be confused with betaine HCl (betaine hydrochloride or betaine hydrochloric acid). Betaine HCl is a gastric acidifier that is supposed to compensate for the decline in gastric acidity in old age. Betaine HCl is said to improve digestion, nutrient absorption and the prevention of gastrointestinal infections. The pure betaine in our product is not in the form of hydrochloride.

With a consumption of up to 1.5 grams per day, betaine contributes to a normal homocysteine ​​metabolism. Caution: A daily intake of more than 4 grams can increase the level of cholesterol in the blood.

Zusammen mit NMN

Ich habe das TMG bestellt, weil ich gelesen habe, dass man es bei der Einnahme von NMN dazu nehmen sollte, als Methylspender. Das Produkt macht soweit einen guten Eindruck. Ich finde es auch super, dass hier regionale Rohstoffe genutzt werden. Ich nehme die Kombi aus NMN, Resveratrol und TMG seit ca. 2 Wochen, muss aber sagen, dass ich schon einen deutlichen Effekt spüre. Ich bin 64 Jahre alt und spüre eine deutliche Steigerung meiner Energie.
